A note from the Artistic Director

Introduction to our 2016-2017 Season

Dr. Paul Schultz, Artistic Director and Founder of Northwest Repertory Singers

The 16th season of NWRS will be one that is very unique and challenging.  Our December concerts, A December to Remember, will focus on familiar melodies cherished by families with children.  The repertoire includes contemporary settings of well-known carols; many set for brass ensemble, percussion and organ.  Special guest artists include a children’s choir from Geiger Montessori School in Tacoma and the Lyric Brass Quintet.  The concert will conclude with a world premiere performance of setting of carols by Kyle Haugen for choir, children’s choir, brass, organ, and audience.  The choir will surround the audience for a thrilling and emotional finale.

Our concerts in May, 2017 are titled Celebrating the Arts in Tacoma.  The music will be presented in three segments, each relating to an exhibit at one of our three major Tacoma museums.  The exhibit at the Tacoma Art Museum will be the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition 2016.  This traveling exhibit from the National Portrait Gallery will feature 43 portraits.  The exhibit at the Washington State History Museum relates to immigration to the state of Washington and the importance of art and music within the many cultures inhabiting our state.  We will focus on the exhibit titled “Coming to Washington:  George Washington Bush.”  The focus at the Museum of Glass will be around their exhibit “Into the Deep.”  The emphasis on water and sea creatures should prove to be haunting in many ways.  Water and glass has been popular with composers for several centuries and some of the repertoire from the 21st century is especially creative.  The concerts will be presented in a multi-media format with slides and film presentations above and around the choir as they perform.  There are likely to be special presentations at each museum prior to the scheduled concerts.

Please save the dates and plan now to join us for these extraordinary programs.  We are proud of the musical talent and incredible exhibits we are able to experience in Tacoma.  Plan to join us and experience that in Tacoma, home is where the art is!

Most Sincerely,

Paul Schultz
