Dear Friends of Northwest Repertory Singers,

Get ready to enjoy a captivating program of song as NWRS presents, “To Life! To Love!” on May 4 at 7:30 PM and May 5 at 3 PM at Christ Episcopal Church.

Marjorie Skreen and Duane Hulbert, piano duet

Artistic Director Kyle Haugen has curated an inspiring program designed to celebrate the beauty of the human spirit and the ways we experience love. The centerpiece of the concert is the first collection of Liebeslieder waltzes by Johannes Brahms, a composer of the late Romantic era.

Scored for singers and two pianists, we’re delighted to present the choral movements of this landmark work with collaborative pianists Marjorie Skreen and Duane Hulbert. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself tapping your feet to this clever and lively music!

Our repertoire also includes modern gems such as Elaine Hagenberg’s “Measure Me, Sky,” a piece that urges the exploration of life’s boundless potential, and Cecilia McDowall’s “Love’s Philosophy,” which intricately weaves together harmonies reflecting the richness of love’s emotions.

We’ll journey through time with Emma Lou Diemer’s settings of Shakespeare poems in Three Madrigals and explore powerful themes conveyed in René Clausen’s “Set Me as a Seal” and Undine Smith Moore’s “I Would Be True.”

The concert concludes with the infectious energy of Moses Hogan’s “This Little Light of Mine” and the poignant beauty of Kim André Arnesen’s “My Flame the Song,” each offering a unique perspective on the meaning of life and love.

Please join us on May 4 and May 5 as we share a concert filled with a wide range of emotion and memorable melodies. Purchase your tickets here. We look forward to welcoming you “To Life! To Love!”

“Shenandoah”

JUNE 2021: Our online “virtual choir” offerings conclude with a poignant setting of the folk song, “Shenandoah.” Thank you for supporting us this season as we continued to bring you music online during the pandemic. All of our 20th season videos may be found at our YouTube channel.

Two Contrasting Pieces from Our Online 20th Season

MAY 2021: As we continue to offer music while separated from each other and from our audiences, we hope you’ll enjoy our two most recent choral videos. We publicize premieres on Facebook and all videos may be found at our YouTube channel.

“Meet Me at the Green Glen” features live audio from the 2018 farewell concert of our late founder and former artistic director, Paul Schultz, as he conducts the world premiere of a poignant piece written for the occasion by his wife, composer Donna Gartman Schultz. Videos and photos of green glens from around the world give new dimension to the poetry by John Clare.

“The Wellerman” is our celebration of the sea shanty! Each singer recorded audio and video separately on a mobile device, and the parts were painstakingly edited together to make a “virtual” choir. We bet you’ll find yourself singing the chorus of this traditional sea shanty from New Zealand with us: “Soon may the Wellerman come / to bring us sugar and tea and rum!”

DECEMBER 2020: This 40-minute program, hosted by Artistic Director Kyle Haugen, features new “virtual choir” presentations and archival recordings set to beautiful imagery. Video elements include landscape aerials, NASA footage, and even a computer-generated animation of the ethereal sounds of “Snowforms.” And, to help us celebrate our twentieth season, NWRS Founder and Artistic Director Emeritus Paul Schultz joins via a recorded Zoom interview. From our choir family to yours, we wish you peace and joy this holiday. Season’s Greetings! https://youtu.be/RIqa1rDiN0k

During this season we are making the most of what we have to offer and delivering a first time online experience to represent our music this season.
We hope you enjoy!
